Paving Eersterivier

Paving in Eersterivier, Cape Town

Paving Wiz lays driveways, patios and parking areas in Eersterivier, Blue Downs, Malibu Village, Wesbank and Forest Heights. This is low ground on the eastern side of the Flats, close to where the Kuils River runs, and the jobs that go wrong here almost always go wrong on water.

Get the fall right before anything else

On a flat, low plot there is very little natural gradient to work with, so the fall has to be created deliberately and it has to be set before the first brick is laid. A driveway that drains toward the garage door will put water inside it in a Cape winter, and no amount of good brickwork fixes that afterwards.

We shoot levels first, decide where the water is going to go, and build the base to that. It is the least visible part of the job and the part that decides how you feel about it in July.

Where the water actually goes

Drainage option When we use it Added cost
Fall to the street Where the kerb is lower than the house Included
Channel drain at the gate Where run-off comes in off the road R450 – R900 per metre run
Fall to a soakaway Flat plots with nowhere to shed to Quoted per job
Permeable surface Where there is no fall available at all R350 – R500/m²

Ground conditions on the eastern Flats

The sand here holds more silt than the clean sand further west, which means it compacts better but also holds water for longer once it is wet. Excavation tends to go a little deeper than it does in Khayelitsha or Mitchells Plain, and that shows up in the sub-base line of the quote.

Eersterivier paving questions

My garage floods every winter. Can paving fix it?

Usually yes, if the fall is re-set away from the door and a channel drain is put across the entrance. We look at where the water is coming from before quoting.

What does a 50m² job cost?

R15,000 to R21,000 installed in standard grey brick.

Do you remove the old paving?

Yes, and the rubble goes with it. Lifting is quoted as a separate line at R60 to R120 per square metre.
