Paving Prices Cape Town – Cost Per Square Metre in 2026

hero prices Cape Town

Paving in Cape Town costs roughly R300 to R580 per square metre installed, depending on the paver you choose, what has to happen to the ground underneath, and whether cars will drive on it. A standard grey brick driveway lands near the bottom of that range; exposed aggregate or a cobble patio sits near the top. This page breaks the rate down so you can sanity-check any quote you are given.

Paving cost per square metre in Cape Town

Every installed paving price is built from three parts. Quoted separately they look like this:

Cost component Low High What moves it
Pavers (the brick itself) R120/m² R200/m² Thickness, colour, shape
Labour R100/m² R200/m² Pattern, cutting, site access
Sub-base & bedding R80/m² R180/m² Soil type, depth, load
Installed total R300/m² R580/m²

If a quote is far below R300/m², something has been left out — usually the sub-base. That is the part you cannot see and the part that fails first.

Typical installed rates by paving type

Paving type Installed rate Best suited to
Standard grey paving brick R300 – R420/m² Driveways, parking areas, budget-conscious jobs
Tar / asphalt surfacing R280 – R400/m² Long driveways, farm and commercial access
Permeable or grass-block paving R350 – R500/m² Sloped sites, stormwater control, green cover
Cobble R380 – R520/m² Patios, entrances, heritage-style properties
Exposed aggregate R450 – R650/m² Pool surrounds, patios, feature areas

What pushes a paving quote up

  • Vehicle loading — add R80 to R150/m². A footpath needs about 50mm of bedding over compacted soil. A driveway that carries a bakkie needs a deeper compacted G5 sub-base. This is the single biggest hidden difference between two quotes.
  • Lifting old paving — R60 to R120/m². Existing brick or concrete has to come up and go somewhere. Rubble removal is usually billed separately.
  • Paver thickness — about R20/m² per extra 10mm. 50mm pavers suit patios and walkways; 60mm and up is normal where vehicles run.
  • Colour — around R15/m² over grey. Charcoal, terracotta and tan all carry a premium over standard grey.
  • Pattern. Herringbone interlocks better under vehicle loads than stretcher bond, but it needs more cutting at the edges, so labour rises.
  • Edge restraints — R80 to R150 per linear metre. Without a proper edge, paving spreads sideways and the joints open up.
  • Access. If a truck cannot reach the work area, sand, stone and pavers get barrowed in, and that is labour time.

What a typical Cape Town job costs

Job Approx. area Indicative installed cost
Single driveway, standard grey brick ~35m² R10,500 – R14,700
Double driveway, vehicle-rated base ~60m² R21,000 – R31,000
Braai patio, cobble ~25m² R9,500 – R13,000
Pool surround, exposed aggregate ~40m² R18,000 – R26,000
Small complex parking area ~200m² R64,000 – R98,000

As a rule of thumb, a single garage floor is about 18m² — useful for pacing out your own area before you call anyone.

Cape Town conditions that affect the price

Local ground conditions matter more here than the brochure rate suggests.

  • Sandy soils on the Cape Flats, Table View and Blouberg drain well but move. They need proper compaction and a well-graded sub-base or the paving settles unevenly within a season.
  • Clay-rich ground in parts of the northern suburbs holds water and swells. Depth of excavation goes up, and so does the price.
  • South-easter wind drives sand out of open joints on exposed sites. Joint sand stabiliser or a sealer is worth costing in from the start.
  • Sloped sites in the southern suburbs and Helderberg need fall calculated so stormwater runs away from the house, not toward it. Permeable paving is often the cheaper answer to a drainage problem than a French drain.

Paving cost questions we get asked

How much does it cost to pave a driveway in Cape Town?

A single driveway of about 35m² in standard grey brick typically runs R10,500 to R14,700 installed. A double driveway built to carry a bakkie is usually R21,000 to R31,000, because the sub-base has to be deeper.

Is paving cheaper than concrete?

Per square metre they are close. Paving wins on repairability — a damaged section is lifted and re-laid, where cracked concrete has to be broken out and recast. Paving also handles ground movement better, which matters on sandy Cape Town soils.

Why are two paving quotes so far apart?

Almost always the sub-base. One quote prices a compacted stone layer under the pavers and the other prices bedding sand straight onto soil. Ask both contractors to state the sub-base depth in writing.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. We measure on site and give you a written, itemised price per square metre across greater Cape Town.
