Paving Helderberg

Strand and Gordon’s Bay sand versus the upper slopes

The Helderberg changes ground over a few kilometres. Strand and Gordon’s Bay sit on coastal sand that drains well and needs compaction and edge restraint. Toward Sir Lowry’s Pass and the upper Somerset West estates the soil is heavier and the plots slope, so drainage and fall do more of the work. The same paver needs a different build-up depending on which end of town it goes into.

Paving for two and three cars

Estate driveways here often carry two or three vehicles plus a boat or caravan. That means a vehicle-rated base across the whole driveway, not just the wheel tracks, and 60mm pavers in herringbone. The south-easter also funnels hard through this corner, so exposed joints get stabilised.
