What the ground is like here

The northern suburbs sit on a mix of Malmesbury shale and clay-rich soils that hold water through the winter and swell as they do. That means excavation usually goes deeper here than it does on the sandy flats, and a properly compacted G5 sub-base matters more, not less. Older homes around Parow, Goodwood and Bellville often have original 1960s and 70s driveways laid straight onto soil, which is why so much of our work in this belt is lifting a failed surface and rebuilding the layers underneath it.
