Why 1960s and 70s driveways here sink
The northern suburbs sit on Malmesbury shale and clay-rich soil. Clay holds winter rain, swells, then shrinks back in summer. A driveway laid straight onto that soil rides the movement and cracks along the wheel tracks. Most original driveways in Parow, Goodwood and older Bellville were built that way. The fix is depth: excavate below the active clay, lay a compacted G5 sub-base, restrain the edges.
Re-lay or replace: what decides it
- Re-lay when the pavers are whole and still made. Cement pavers from that era are usually 60mm and sound. The failure is underneath them.
- Replace when more than about a fifth of the bricks are broken, or the colour is discontinued and a patch would show.
- Either way the base is rebuilt. Re-laying good bricks on the same failed soil gives the same result in three winters.
