When a house goes up, the offcuts, broken block, sand and rubble usually get pushed into the area that later becomes the driveway. It looks like ground. It is not ground. Fill of that kind settles for years, and it settles unevenly because it is a mixture of things that compress at different rates.
Paving laid on it will follow it down. That is why a two-year-old house can have a driveway with a dip in it while the fifty-year-old house next door is dead flat.
How we find out before quoting
We dig a test hole on the site visit. It takes ten minutes and it is the difference between a quote you can rely on and a quote with a variation order attached to it later. If there is fill, we tell you how deep it goes and what removing it costs before you sign anything.

The house is new, why is the driveway already sinking?
Almost always builder’s fill under it. The fill compresses for years after the house is finished.
Do you have to take all the rubble out?
As much as sits under the paved area. It is carted off site and quoted as its own line.
What does a 50m² driveway cost here?
R15,000 to R21,000 on natural ground. On deep fill it runs higher because of the excavation and the stone that replaces it.
