What the ground is like here

The Cape Flats are exactly what the name says: deep, wind-blown sand with a high water table in places. Sand drains beautifully and compacts poorly, so paving laid without a graded stone base will settle into ruts within a season or two, especially where a bakkie parks in the same spot every night. We build up from the sand rather than bedding straight onto it, and we edge-restrain every job, because unrestrained paving on sand spreads sideways faster here than anywhere else in the metro.
