Paving Wiz lays driveways, yards and parking areas across Khayelitsha, Site B, Site C, Harare and Makhaza. The ground here is deep, clean, wind-blown sand. It drains beautifully and it compacts badly, and those two facts decide how a job has to be built.
Sand drains well and holds nothing
Contents
Clean sand has almost no cohesion. Put a wheel on paving that is bedded straight onto it and the sand moves out from under the brick sideways. Within a season the wheel tracks dish, the joints open, and sand starts washing out of the joints every time it rains.
We build up from the sand with a graded stone sub-base, compacted in layers, so the load spreads across a wide footprint instead of punching down in two lines.
Edge restraint is not optional on sand
This is the single biggest difference between paving that lasts here and paving that does not. Unrestrained paving on sand spreads outward at the perimeter faster than anywhere else in the metro. Every edge on every job we do gets a haunched concrete restraint — along the driveway sides, around the apron and anywhere the paving meets soft ground.
Build-up we use on sand
| Layer | What we use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Excavation | Down to firm ground | Soft sand is removed, not built on |
| Sub-base | Compacted G5 stone in layers | Spreads the wheel load across the sand |
| Bedding | Screeded sand, even depth | Levelling only – never used to hide a bad base |
| Surface | 60mm pavers, herringbone | Interlocks under braking and turning |
| Edges | Haunched concrete restraint | Stops the paving spreading sideways |
What it costs in Khayelitsha
Nothing in a Khayelitsha price is unusual except the edge work, which is not optional on sand and which we always show as its own line.
| What is being priced | Rate | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Driveway, standard grey brick | R300 – R420/m² | Includes the compacted stone sub-base |
| Edge restraints | R80 – R150 per linear metre | Haunched concrete, every exposed edge |
| Lifting old paving | R60 – R120/m² | Rubble removed from site |
| Re-laying your existing bricks | from R150/m² | No new pavers to pay for |
Labour on its own is R100 to R200 per square metre. The full breakdown — pavers, labour and sub-base — with more worked examples is on our paving prices Cape Town page.
Khayelitsha paving questions
Why did my last driveway sink?
Almost always the base. Paving bedded on sand with no compacted stone layer under it will rut where the wheels run, usually inside the first two winters.
What does a driveway cost here?
R10,500 to R14,700 for a 35m² single driveway in standard grey brick, including the sub-base.
Can the old bricks be re-used?
Often yes. If the pavers are sound we lift them, correct the base and re-lay the same bricks, which saves the paver cost.
