What the ground is like here

Swartland and Boland work is mostly farm and smallholding access: long runs, heavy vehicles and a lot of summer dust. Tar and asphalt often make more sense than brick over long distances, and where brick is wanted the sub-base has to be built for a loaded truck rather than a car. The heavy shale-derived soils out here move seasonally, so depth of excavation and compaction do most of the work in keeping a surface flat.
