Winelands properties are typically larger, with long approach driveways and working vehicles on them – a delivery truck or a tractor loads a surface very differently from a family car. Granite and decomposed granite soils around Stellenbosch and Paarl behave well once compacted, but heavy summer downpours off the mountains put real water across a long driveway, so falls and cross-drainage matter more than they do on a suburban plot. Cobble and clay pavers suit the older werf and Cape Dutch properties here.
