Paving Wiz lays driveways, courtyards, werf surfaces and farm access in Franschhoek, La Motte, Groendal and along the valley. Two quite different jobs sit side by side here: village properties where the surface has to suit an old streetscape, and working farms where it has to carry a tractor.
Cobble suits the village, and costs more
Contents
Cobble is the surface that belongs on an old Franschhoek property, and the reason it is dearer is labour rather than material. Small units mean more pieces to lay per square metre and a great deal more cutting at every edge, curve and corner. Laid in fans or arcs, which is what looks right on a werf, it is slower again.
We quote cobble and brick side by side on village properties so you can see what the look is costing you and decide with the number in front of you.
Farm access is a different problem
A tractor with a loaded trailer puts more through one axle than anything that will ever use a village driveway. On the farm side of a property the question is not which cobble but how deep the stone goes, and the two surfaces can meet at a sensible boundary rather than one specification being stretched across both.

What it costs in Franschhoek
Cobble costs more than brick and it is usually the right answer on a heritage property. Farm access is priced off the vehicle, not the look.
| Job | Surface | Installed rate |
|---|---|---|
| Village driveway or courtyard | Cobble | R380 – R520/m² |
| Village driveway, budget | Standard grey brick | R300 – R420/m² |
| Werf and entrance courtyard | Cobble, laid in fans or arcs | R420 – R560/m² |
| Farm access for tractors | 80mm block on a heavy base | R420 – R620/m² |
Labour on its own is R100 to R200 per square metre. The full breakdown — pavers, labour and sub-base — with more worked examples is on our paving prices Cape Town page.
Franschhoek paving questions
Why is cobble so much more than brick?
Labour. There are more units per square metre and far more cutting, especially on curves and fans.
Can you match existing cobble?
Often. Bring us one or send a photo with something for scale before you commit to a patch.
Do you do long farm driveways?
Yes. They are priced off the heaviest vehicle that uses them and the area, and the rate improves with length.
