Paving Paarl: the ground under this town changes within a few kilometres, and it changes what a driveway needs. Properties on the granite slopes below Paarl Rock sit on free-draining decomposed granite. Properties down on the Berg River flats sit on alluvial soil with a clay fraction that swells in winter. Same town, two builds. Installed rates R300 to R580 per square metre, measured on site and quoted in writing.
Which side of town are you on?
Contents
| Where | Ground | What the build needs |
|---|---|---|
| Granite slopes below Paarl Rock — Boschenmeer side, upper Main Street | Decomposed granite, drains fast | Standard compacted base; attention goes to fall and run-off on the gradient |
| Berg River flats — Southern Paarl, Dal Josafat | Alluvium with clay, holds winter water | Deeper G5 sub-base, compacted in layers, restrained edges |
| Historic Main Street strip | Varies | Cobble or clay paver to suit the streetscape; check street-facing work if the building is listed |
| Wine farms and smallholdings | Mixed | Base sized to tractor and delivery loads, not to cars |
If you are unsure which you are on, the tell is winter: ground that puddles and stays soft after rain is the clay side.
What that means for a quote
Two Paarl driveways of identical size can differ by thousands, and it is almost always the sub-base rather than the brick. On the granite side a standard compacted layer does the job. On the river flats the same driveway needs a deeper base built up in compacted layers, because clay that swells and shrinks will otherwise move the surface in two wheel tracks within a couple of seasons. Ask any contractor to state the sub-base depth in writing before you compare prices.

Paarl paving questions
How deep should the sub-base be?
On the granite side, a standard compacted stone layer. On the Berg River flats, deeper and built up in layers. The load matters too — a bakkie needs more than a car. Any quote that does not state a depth is not comparable to one that does.
Can you pave over my existing driveway?
Sometimes, if levels allow and the old surface is stable. If it is moving, it comes out — new paving laid over a failing base will follow it down.
Do you work on the wine farms?
Yes. Farm access and working yards are priced on load rather than area, because the base is where the cost sits.
When is the best time of year?
Any time outside heavy rain. Paarl takes its rain May to August, and compaction needs a dry base, so winter jobs are scheduled around the weather.
Do you charge for the quote?
No. We measure on site and give you a written, itemised price per square metre.
