Paving Stellenbosch: this is the one town in our area where the surface you may lay is sometimes decided for you. Stellenbosch falls under its own municipality, not the City of Cape Town, and the historic core carries heritage protection that reaches street-facing paving. Installed rates R300 to R580 per square metre. We measure on site and quote in writing.
Where you are in town changes what you can lay
Contents
| Area | Typical property | Surface that fits |
|---|---|---|
| Historic core — Dorp, Church, Drostdy | Pre-1940 , often heritage-listed | Cobble or clay paver; check before altering anything street-facing |
| Mostertsdrift, Brandwacht, Karindal | Established residential | Anything; cobble is the common choice for the look |
| Student housing near the campus | Converted houses, high foot traffic | Hard-wearing cement paver, easy to lift and repair |
| Wine farms and smallholdings out of town | Farm access, working yards | 60mm on a deep base, sized to tractor and delivery loads |
Structures older than 60 years are protected under national heritage law, and Stellenbosch applies that seriously. If your property is in the old town and the work is visible from the street, confirm with the municipality before committing — it affects material and pattern, not whether you can pave at all.
Ground and water
Stellenbosch soils are granite-derived off the Papegaaiberg and Simonsberg, with alluvium along the Eerste River. The granite soils drain well. The river-flat properties do not, and those need the deeper compacted base. The town also runs a genuine winter wet season, so any job between May and August is scheduled around dry days — compaction on a wet base is wasted work.
What it costs in Stellenbosch
| Job | Typical size | Installed |
|---|---|---|
| Cobble driveway | 30–45m² | R13,500 – R26,000 |
| Standard brick driveway | 30–40m² | R10,500 – R19,000 |
| Courtyard or stoep | 15–30m² | R4,800 – R13,500 |
| Farm access / working yard | 100m²+ | from R300/m² |
Cobble costs more than brick because of the cutting, not the material. Full breakdown on our paving prices page, and see paving patterns for how the laying pattern changes the labour.
Stellenbosch paving questions
Do I need permission to pave my driveway?
For a normal replacement in a modern suburb, no. In the historic core, on a heritage-listed property, or where the work changes a street-facing surface, check with Stellenbosch Municipality first. It is a short enquiry and it avoids an expensive reversal.
Why is cobble the standard look here?
It matches the older streetscape. It is also genuinely durable — small units move independently, which suits ground that shifts a little. The cost is in the cutting and edging, not the stone.
Do you do wine farm access roads?
Yes. Those are priced on load rather than area — a tractor and a loaded truck need a different base to a car, and the base is where the money goes.
Can you work around a student let?
Yes, and it is easier in the December–January gap. Foot traffic can use a surface the same day the joints are compacted.
