Paving Wellington: we lay driveways, patios, stoep areas and farm access across Wellington and the Berg River valley, roughly 72km from Cape Town in the Drakenstein municipality. Rates run R300 to R580 per square metre installed. We measure on site and quote in writing, itemised, with no charge for the visit.
What the ground does here, and why it changes the price
Contents
Wellington sits where the Berg River valley floor meets the granite slopes of the Hawequas. Two different ground conditions, two different builds:
- Valley floor and the older town grid — alluvial soils with a clay fraction. Clay swells when it takes up winter rain and shrinks back in summer. Paving laid on bedding sand straight onto that will lift and settle with the seasons. It needs a compacted stone sub-base to sit on something that does not move with the water table.
- Slopes toward Bainskloof and the smallholdings — granite-derived, coarser, drains faster. Less swell, but more fall to manage, so the levels and the run-off matter more than the depth does.
Wellington also runs hotter in summer than the Cape Town suburbs and takes its rain in winter. That combination is why joint sand and edge restraints matter here: the surface expands, and without a restrained edge the outer courses creep.
What paving costs in Wellington
| Job | Typical size | Build-up | Installed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single driveway | 30–40m² | G5 sub-base, 60mm pavers, restrained edges | R10,500 – R19,000 |
| Double driveway | 60–80m² | Deeper G5 base for two vehicles | R21,000 – R38,000 |
| Stoep / patio | 15–30m² | Lighter base, 50mm pavers | R4,800 – R13,500 |
| Pool surround | 25–45m² | Non-slip surface, laid to fall away from the water | R9,000 – R25,000 |
| Farm or smallholding access | 100m²+ | Base sized to the heaviest vehicle, usually a bakkie or tractor | from R300/m² |
The spread inside each band is almost always the sub-base, not the brick. See the full breakdown on our paving prices page.
Which paver for which job
| Paver | Thickness | Use it for | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grey cement brick | 60mm | Driveways, farm access | Cheapest per m², repairs are invisible |
| Cobble | 60mm | Driveways, entrances | More cutting, so more labour |
| Bevel / interlocker | 50–60mm | Patios, walkways | 50mm only where no vehicle runs |
| Exposed aggregate | cast in place | Pool surrounds, stoeps | Best wet grip of the four |

Paving questions in Wellington
How deep should the sub-base be on clay?
On the valley-floor clay we build a compacted G5 layer, not bedding sand alone. On a driveway carrying a bakkie that layer goes deeper than it would on the sandier Cape Flats. If a quote does not state a sub-base depth, ask for it in writing before you compare it.
Do you travel to Wellington from Cape Town?
Yes. Wellington, Paarl and Klapmuts are one working area for us, so the site visit and the quote carry no travel charge.
How long does a driveway take?
Two to three days for a single or double. Add a day if old paving or concrete has to be lifted first.
Can you pave in winter?
Yes, but not in rain. Wellington takes its rain between May and August, so winter jobs get scheduled around the weather. Compaction needs the base dry.
Do you do farm and smallholding access roads?
Yes. Those are priced on the load rather than the area — a tractor needs a different base to a car, and the base is what the price turns on.
