Paving Wiz lays driveways, patios and front yards across Mitchells Plain, Portlands, Rocklands, Tafelsig, Lentegeur and Westridge. Mitchells Plain was laid out to a plan, which is genuinely useful when you are pricing paving: plot sizes and frontages repeat, so the areas are predictable.

Because the area was built out in planned phases, a front yard in Portlands is much the same size as a front yard two streets away. A typical front yard with a driveway strip runs roughly 30 to 45m², and a full front-and-side job lands nearer 60m². You can pace it out before anyone comes round: a single garage floor is about 18m², which is a useful yardstick.
What the south-easter does to joints
Mitchells Plain is exposed. The summer south-easter drives sand out of open paving joints, and once the joints empty, the bricks stop interlocking and start rocking under traffic. Kiln-dried joint sand vibrated in properly is the base answer; on the most exposed plots a joint stabiliser or sealer is worth costing in from the start rather than adding two summers later.
Typical areas and what they cost
| Typical job | Area | Standard grey brick, installed |
|---|---|---|
| Driveway strip only | ~20m² | R6,000 – R8,400 |
| Front yard with driveway | ~35m² | R10,500 – R14,700 |
| Front yard, larger plot | 50m² | R15,000 – R21,000 |
| Front and side yard | ~60m² | R18,000 – R25,200 |
What it costs in Mitchells Plain
Because plot sizes repeat here, the prices do too. The figures below are the same standard grey brick rate applied to the areas we actually measure in Mitchells Plain.
| Extra you might add | Cost | Worth it when |
|---|---|---|
| Joint stabiliser or sealer | Quoted per m² | Exposed plots that lose joint sand each summer |
| Charcoal or terracotta instead of grey | about R15/m² | You want the colour to last, not a painted finish |
| 60mm instead of 50mm pavers | about R20/m² | Anywhere a car will stand |
| Herringbone instead of stretcher bond | Labour rises | Under vehicle loads |
Labour on its own is R100 to R200 per square metre. The full breakdown — pavers, labour and sub-base — with more worked examples is on our paving prices Cape Town page.
Mitchells Plain paving questions
How do I measure my own yard?
Pace the length and the width and multiply. A single garage floor is about 18m² if you need something to calibrate against.
Why do my joints keep emptying?
Wind. Open joints on an exposed plot lose sand every summer. Vibrated kiln-dried sand plus a stabiliser holds it.
Is a pattern more expensive?
Herringbone and circles need more cutting at the edges, so labour rises. The brick cost is the same.
