Paving Somerset West

Paving Somerset West driveway on a slope

Paving Somerset West: the job here is usually about slope. The suburb runs from the Helderberg foothills down toward the N2, so a large share of driveways sit on a gradient — and on a gradient the fall, the run-off and the edge restraint decide whether the surface lasts. Installed rates R300 to R580 per square metre, quoted in writing after a site measure.

Gradient changes the build, not just the price

Driveway slope What it needs Why
Gentle, under about 1:12 Standard build, fall to one side Water runs off before it can sit
Moderate, 1:12 to 1:8 Cross-fall plus a channel or drain at the bottom Run-off concentrates at the low end and undermines the edge
Steep, over about 1:8 Textured or cobble surface, stronger edge restraint, drainage designed in Grip matters for tyres, and water moves fast enough to wash joint sand out
Any slope onto a street Levels checked against the kerb and the stormwater line Water must not discharge across the pavement

Smooth pavers on a steep Somerset West driveway are a mistake you feel in the first wet winter. Cobble and textured surfaces hold grip.

Ground conditions in the Helderberg basin

Soils here are granite and sandstone derived off the mountain, generally better draining than the clay of the northern suburbs. That helps — but the gradient means water arrives with energy rather than sitting, so drainage design replaces excavation depth as the thing that matters. On the flatter sections toward Firgrove and the N2 the ground holds more water and the build reverts to a deeper compacted base.

Somerset West paving questions

My driveway is steep — will paving be slippery?

Not if the surface is chosen for it. Cobble and textured pavers grip; smooth slabs do not. On anything over about 1:8 we will not quote a smooth surface.

Where does the water go?

Onto your own stormwater, or into a channel at the bottom of the run. What it must not do is sheet across the pavement into the street — that is both a nuisance and how the bottom edge gets undermined.

Do you work in the security estates?

Yes. Somerset Ridge, Parel Vallei and the golf estates all need contractor registration and set working hours; we arrange that before the crew arrives.

Can you match paving to an existing driveway?

Usually. Cement pavers weather, so a new section never matches perfectly on day one — it closes up over a season. Where the match has to be exact we lift and re-lay the old bricks into the visible area and put the new ones where they show least.
