Paving Grassy Park

Paving in Grassy Park, Cape Town

Paving Wiz lays driveways, patios and pool surrounds in Grassy Park, Lotus River, Parkwood and Pelikan Park. This is low, flat, sandy ground close to Zeekoevlei and Rondevlei, and the thing that decides whether paving lasts here is not the brick — it is what the ground does in July.

The winter water table is the problem to solve

Grassy Park sits low. In a wet Cape winter the water table comes up close to the surface across much of the area, and ground that carried a car perfectly well in February turns soft. Paving bedded straight onto that sand will rut where the wheels run and stay rutted.

The answer is a deeper, well-graded stone sub-base that spreads the load wider, plus a surface laid to a fall that actually takes water somewhere. On a flat plot that usually means falling to the street or to a soakaway, decided on site with a level, not guessed.

Where permeable paving earns its money

On a plot that ponds, a permeable or grass-block surface lets stormwater through the paving instead of pushing it toward the house. It is often cheaper than putting in a French drain, and it keeps green cover. We price it alongside a conventional build so you can compare the two.

Surface options for low-lying plots

Surface How it handles standing water Installed rate
Standard grey brick on a deep base Sheds water off the surface; needs a fall R300 – R420/m²
Permeable / grass block Takes water down through the surface R350 – R500/m²
Cobble Sheds water; more joints to hold silt R380 – R520/m²
Tar Sheds water; needs a sound base like anything else R280 – R400/m²

What it costs in Grassy Park

On a low plot the sub-base line moves more than the paver line does, because depth of excavation is set by how wet the ground gets. These are the ranges we work to in Grassy Park.

Cost line Low High
Pavers R120/m² R200/m²
Labour R100/m² R200/m²
Sub-base on low-lying ground R120/m² R180/m²
Installed total R340/m² R580/m²

Labour on its own is R100 to R200 per square metre. The full breakdown — pavers, labour and sub-base — with more worked examples is on our paving prices Cape Town page.

Grassy Park paving questions

Will paving make my flooding worse?

It can, if it is laid flat and solid with nowhere for water to go. Laid to a fall, or laid permeable, it moves water away from the house rather than holding it against the wall.

How much does it cost to pave 50 square metres here?

R15,000 to R21,000 in standard grey brick. A permeable build over the same 50m² is R17,500 to R25,000.

Can you pave in winter?

Yes, between the fronts. We do not compact a base in standing water, so a wet week can push a start date.
