Paving Wiz lays driveways, patios and pool surrounds in Kuils River, Highbury, Sarepta, Zevenwacht and Kleinvlei. The ground falls toward the river through much of this area, which is good news and bad news: you have a natural fall to work with, and you have somewhere for a lot of water to arrive in a hurry.
A slope gives you drainage for free
Contents
On a flat Cape Flats plot we have to create a fall. Here it is already there, which means water will leave the surface without any help. The design question is not whether it drains but where it drains to, because everything that runs off your driveway arrives somewhere lower down.
Intercepting run-off before it reaches the house
The classic Kuils River failure is a driveway that slopes down from the street toward a garage cut into the hill. In a heavy winter downpour, that driveway is a channel pointed at the garage door. A channel drain across the entrance, or across the bottom of the drive, costs far less than repeatedly clearing out a flooded garage.
Permeable paving is the other answer, and on a long approach driveway it often works out cheaper than piping the water somewhere.
Building on a gradient
| Element | Flat plot | Sloped plot |
|---|---|---|
| Setting falls | Created with the base | Already there, needs controlling |
| Edge restraints | Standard haunching | Heavier, resists downhill creep |
| Pattern | Any | Herringbone, it holds under braking |
| Drainage | Fall to street or soakaway | Channel drain or permeable surface |
What it costs in Kuils River
A sloped plot costs more than a flat one, and the reason is cutting and stepping rather than the paving itself.
| Gradient | What the build needs | Effect on price |
|---|---|---|
| Gentle, under 1 in 20 | Standard build, natural fall | No change |
| Moderate | Stepped base, more edge restraint | Add about 10 – 15% |
| Steep | Terracing or steps, retaining edges | Quoted per job |
| Across the fall | Channel drain to intercept run-off | R450 – R900 per metre |
Labour on its own is R100 to R200 per square metre. The full breakdown — pavers, labour and sub-base — with more worked examples is on our paving prices Cape Town page.
Kuils River paving questions
My driveway runs water into the garage. Can that be fixed?
Yes. Re-setting the fall at the bottom and putting a channel drain across the entrance is the usual answer, and it is quoted separately at R450 to R900 per metre run.
Is paving safe on a steep driveway?
Yes, laid herringbone with proper edge restraint. The pattern matters more on a slope than anywhere else because of braking loads.
What does a sloped driveway cost?
Start from R300 to R420 per square metre for standard grey brick and add roughly 10 to 15 per cent for a moderate gradient.
