Paving Paarden Eiland

Paving in Paarden Eiland, Cape Town

Paving Wiz lays yards, hardstanding and access routes in Paarden Eiland and along the Table Bay industrial strip. This is low ground close to the water, much of it made up rather than natural, and it asks two things of a paved surface at once: carry weight, and survive salt.

Made ground does not behave like natural ground

Much of this area was built up. What is under a yard here can be anything, and it can change across a single site. We test-dig in more than one place before quoting, because a price based on one hole in the wrong corner is a price that will change halfway through.

A high water table under a heavy surface

Water close to the surface softens whatever is above it. Under a loaded truck that means the stone base has to be thicker to spread the load further, and the surface has to shed water rather than hold it. Where there is nowhere obvious for water to go, a permeable build is sometimes the cheaper engineering answer.

Salt air and what it does

Salt does not attack the pavers. It attacks steel, and it works into any reinforced concrete edge detail over time. Where we can, edge restraints are detailed so there is no exposed steel, and we use blocks rather than in-situ concrete for surfaces that have to last near the water.

What it costs in Paarden Eiland

Two things move a Paarden Eiland price: how deep we have to go to reach something that will carry a load, and how much drainage has to be built in.

Line item Rate When it applies
Yard paving, truck-rated R420 – R620/m² Standard for loaded vehicles
Additional excavation on made ground Quoted per m³ Where fill will not carry
Channel drainage R450 – R900 per metre Low-lying sections
Permeable surfacing R350 – R500/m² Where run-off has nowhere to go

Labour on its own is R100 to R200 per square metre. The full breakdown — pavers, labour and sub-base — with more worked examples is on our paving prices Cape Town page.

Paarden Eiland paving questions

Why do you dig more than one test hole?

Because made ground varies across a site. One hole tells you about one corner.

Will salt damage the paving?

Not the blocks themselves. It is steel and reinforced concrete details that suffer, so we avoid exposed steel in the edge detail.

What does a truck-rated yard cost?

R420 to R620 per square metre installed, before any extra excavation on made ground.
