Bloubergstrand sits on the West Coast north of Milnerton, looking across Table Bay at the mountain. The ground is deep coastal sand and the weather is set by the south-easter, which shapes every build on this page.
Wind is the design condition here
The south-easter comes across this coast with nothing to slow it down. On block paving it empties the joints, and once the joints are empty the bricks stop interlocking and start rocking. On a first-line plot we vibrate kiln-dried sand in and then stabilise it, rather than treating stabilisation as an upgrade to sell you later.
Wind also moves loose sand onto the surface constantly, which is worth knowing before choosing a very pale paver.
Coastal sand and edge restraint
The sand here is clean, deep and mobile — the same problem as the Cape Flats with a stronger wind on top of it. Every edge gets haunched, including the ones you would get away with leaving inland, because unrestrained paving on this ground spreads outward within a season.
