Paving Betty’s Bay

Paving in Betty's Bay, Cape Town

Paving Wiz lays driveways, patios and parking areas in Betty’s Bay, Pringle Bay, Rooi Els and Kleinmond’s western edge. Two things define paving here: the mountain sits directly behind the houses, and a great many of those houses are empty for most of the year.

The mountain is directly behind you

Winter run-off off the Kogelberg comes down through these properties on its way to the sea. On a paved driveway that flow carries sand and fynbos litter, both of which end up in the joints. Once the joints are full of silt they stop draining, water backs up across the surface, and the whole thing behaves like a sealed slab that was never designed to be one.

The fix is upstream: intercept the flow before it reaches the paving, and choose a surface that can cope with what gets past.

A surface for a house nobody is watching

Nothing on an empty plot gets swept, weeded or topped up. Over a Cape winter that is enough for a block-paved driveway with plain sand joints to lose sand, seed weeds, and start loosening. Stabilised joints or a seamless surface cost more once and then ask nothing of you.

Options ranked by how little they need

Surface Maintenance needed Handles silt-laden run-off
Plain sand joints Most Poorly, joints silt up
Stabilised joints Little Better, joints stay closed
Permeable with stone fill Least Well, designed to take water
Exposed aggregate None Sheds it, needs a fall

What it costs in Betty’s Bay

For a house used a few weeks a year, the sensible comparison is the installed cost plus what it takes to keep the surface right between visits.

Choice Installed Upkeep between visits
Block paving, sand joints R300 – R420/m² Weeding and topping up joints
Block paving, stabilised joints R330 – R450/m² Very little
Permeable with stone fill R350 – R500/m² Almost none, water goes through
Exposed aggregate R450 – R650/m² None, no joints at all

Labour on its own is R100 to R200 per square metre. The full breakdown — pavers, labour and sub-base — with more worked examples is on our paving prices Cape Town page.
