Paving Hermanus

Paving Hermanus coastal patio

Paving Hermanus: the deciding factor on this coastline is salt, not soil. Hermanus sits on Walker Bay in the Overstrand municipality, and paving within a few kilometres of the water ages differently to the same job in Cape Town. Installed rates start at R230 per square metre, everything included, measured and quoted in writing. Hermanus has a R600 call-out fee.

What the sea does to paving here

Salt-laden air drives three specific problems, and they decide the surface before anything else does:

  • Efflorescence — salts migrate to the paver surface and dry as a white bloom. Cosmetic, not structural, worse on dark pavers because it shows more.
  • Joint sand loss — the south-easter strips unsealed joints faster on exposed sites than it does inland. Lose the joint sand and the courses start to move.
  • Surface wear on soft stone — sandstone and softer natural stone pit and roughen in salt air. Cement and clay pavers do not.

None of this rules out a good-looking surface. It rules out the wrong one.

Surface choice by distance from the water

Setting Best choice Avoid Sealing
Cliff path / seafront, direct spray Cement paver, light colour Soft natural stone, dark pavers Seal, re-seal every 2–3 years
Within ~1km of the shore Cement or clay paver Untreated sandstone Seal on installation
Inland Hermanus, Hemel-en-Aarde side Anything, including exposed aggregate — Optional
Pool surround anywhere Exposed aggregate or textured paver Smooth slab — lethal wet Seal, non-slip

See exposed aggregate and pool paving in Cape Town for how those two behave.

Holiday houses and access

A lot of Hermanus property is used seasonally, which changes the job in two practical ways. Work can run in the off-season without disrupting anyone, and we can carry the whole thing — measure, quote, install, photographs on completion — without the owner being on site. Steep driveways off the Hemel-en-Aarde and cliff roads also need the fall checked properly; run-off on a slope is what undermines an edge.

Hermanus paving questions

Will paving go white near the sea?

Efflorescence can appear on any cement paver in the first months and usually weathers off. Sealing slows it. Light-coloured pavers hide it; dark ones show every trace.

How often does a sealed surface need re-doing?

Every two to three years on an exposed seafront site, longer inland. A sealed surface also holds its joint sand against the wind, which matters more here than the colour does.

Can you work while we are not there?

Yes. Most Hermanus jobs run that way. We send photographs at base stage and on completion.

Do you cover Onrus, Sandbaai and Vermont?

Yes, and Kleinmond, Betty’s Bay and the Hemel-en-Aarde valley — the whole Overberg stretch.
