Pool surrounds near the water table
A pool surround close to the lagoon has to shed water away from the pool without pushing it into ground that is already wet. Exposed aggregate is the finish most people ask for around a pool here because it is seamless and has no joints to weed, and it is laid to fall away from the coping.
The trade-off is honest to state: repairs to exposed aggregate are less discreet than repairs to block paving, because you cannot lift a section and put it back invisibly.
Wind and open joints
The south-easter takes joint sand out of block paving on any exposed plot, and Milnerton is exposed. Kiln-dried sand vibrated in properly is the starting point; a joint stabiliser is worth costing in on a first-line plot rather than adding after two summers of sweeping.
