Length changes what can go wrong

A short driveway either works or it does not. A long one can be fine for twenty metres and fail in the last five, because the ground changes along its run. We check levels and dig test holes at more than one point on a long approach, rather than assuming what we find at the gate holds at the garage.
Falls over a long run
Over thirty metres a small error in fall becomes a large puddle. The fall has to be set continuously along the run, and where the natural ground does not cooperate, a cross-fall or a mid-run channel drain does the work. This is the part of a long driveway that separates a good job from an expensive disappointment.
Mature trees along the route
Big established trees line a lot of these driveways, and their roots run out further than the canopy suggests. Where a root crosses the route we either bridge it with a deeper base, set a root barrier, or move the line of the driveway. What we do not do is lay over it and hope.
