Paving Wiz lays driveways, patios and pool surrounds in Yzerfontein and along the West Coast up to the Darling turn-off. The ground changes here: instead of the deep loose sand of the metro you often hit calcrete, a hard cemented layer, not far below the surface.
Calcrete under the sand
Contents
Calcrete is sand that has been cemented together by lime over a long time. Where it sits close to the surface it makes a superb foundation — far better than anything the metro sand offers — because it does not move and it carries load. Where you have to get through it to reach a level, it has to be broken, and that is machine time.
We test-dig before quoting for exactly this reason. Two plots a hundred metres apart can price differently, and neither figure is wrong.
What the wind does this far up the coast
Yzerfontein is exposed on a coast with no shelter. Everything said about joint sand on the Blouberg plots applies more strongly here. On a first-line plot a seamless finish such as exposed aggregate removes the maintenance question entirely, which is why it is the surface most often asked for on the holiday houses.
Ground conditions and what they cost
| Ground | Bearing | Excavation |
|---|---|---|
| Calcrete | Excellent | Hard, may need breaking |
| Sand over calcrete | Good once compacted | Straightforward |
| Deep loose sand | Poor until built up | Easy, but more stone needed |
| Made-up platform | Unknown until tested | Test dig first |
What it costs in Yzerfontein
Calcrete cuts both ways on price: it is an excellent thing to build on, and an expensive thing to dig through.
| What we hit | Effect on the build | Effect on price |
|---|---|---|
| Sand over calcrete at depth | Normal excavation, excellent bearing | R300 – R400/m² |
| Calcrete close to surface | Breaking required, less stone needed | Varies, quoted after test dig |
| Loose sand throughout | Standard deep base | R320 – R440/m² |
| Sloping coastal plot | Stepped base, heavier edges | Add 10 – 15% |
Labour on its own is R100 to R200 per square metre. The full breakdown — pavers, labour and sub-base — with more worked examples is on our paving prices Cape Town page.
Yzerfontein paving questions
Do you travel this far?
Yes, Yzerfontein and the West Coast up to Darling are part of our normal working area.
Is calcrete a problem?
It is a bonus to build on and a cost to dig through. Which one it is depends on how deep it sits, so we test-dig before quoting.
What finish needs the least upkeep?
Exposed aggregate at R450 to R650 per square metre. There are no joints to lose in the wind.
