Water is the design problem here, not load
The southern suburbs take the Peninsula’s heaviest rain, and many older properties sit on slopes running off the mountain. The fall of a driveway decides where that water ends up: in the street, or against a garage door and a 1930s foundation. Paving Wiz sets the fall before quoting the paver, and on steep Constantia and Bishopscourt entrances a channel drain across the top is usually part of the job.
When permeable paving is the cheaper answer
Permeable paving lets rain soak through the joints into an open stone base instead of running off. It costs R50 to R80 per square metre more than standard brick at the low end. On a plot where run-off is the problem, that premium is often less than a French drain and the damage it prevents. It is a poor choice under heavy daily vehicle turning.
